How the filing runs

Identify the category

Basic registration, State licence or Central licence is determined by turnover, the nature of the operation and whether you operate across states. Filing under the wrong category is the most common cause of rejection.

Assemble the file

Product list, premises proof and, for manufacturers, layout and water testing are prepared before submission.

File and respond

The application is filed and any departmental query is answered within the window allowed.

Licence issued

Your FSSAI number is issued. It must be displayed at the premises and printed on food packaging.

Operating without one is a prosecutable offence

Running a food business without a valid FSSAI licence carries penalties and, for repeat or serious cases, prosecution under the FSS Act. The number must also be displayed at the premises and on packaging, which is separately enforceable. Renewal falls due before expiry, and lapsed licences cannot be renewed retrospectively, so a lapse means applying afresh.

Common questions

You choose a term between one and five years. Longer terms cost more upfront but avoid frequent renewals.

Before expiry. An expired licence cannot be renewed and requires a fresh application, which means a gap where you are trading unlicensed.
